How Yoga Connects With Math
You might look at our program initially and wonder how doing yoga has anything to do with teaching a child how to perform mental math. It’s a great question, and the answer is everything.
Yoga and math are directly related, and learning yoga is extremely beneficial for learning math.
1.) Math requires a lot of mental focus and concentration to understand difficult concepts and to apply them. Children naturally have a short attention span, and math can sometimes feel daunting to them as they want to move on to something else when they don’t understand new ideas quickly.
Yoga helps children to concentrate longer. According to Psychology Today, yoga “sharpens attention and concentration, and calms and centers the nervous system.” This is the perfect body state for the mind to be in to focus on learning mathematics skills.
2.) Yoga can help improve the balance between physical activity and the rigor of academic life, which can cause students much stress. Yoga releases a chemical in the brain, GABA, that helps to calm nerve activity, and it can improve mood and resilience. When students learn yoga, they are increasing their physical fitness and growing their minds at the same time. It’s a win-win situation for learning mental math.
3.) When the body moves to a state of relaxation, such as that reached when performing yoga and deep breathing, its cells, and nerves relax. It’s not just a surface feeling. This is a powerful state to be in to learn mathematics. Mental math is not something to be feared when the mind is already calm and able to focus on a session of yoga.
4.) The program teaches children independence and the ability to self-regulate. Yoga teaches children how to calm themselves and to look at the world in a new light, from a less agitated perspective. Mental math empowers them to handle material in school easily and to approach learning calmly and with confidence.
